pashas

Turkish provincial governors

Pashas is the plural of pasha, a title of high rank in the Ottoman Empire and some other Middle Eastern countries.

Pashas were military commanders, provincial governors, or other officials of distinction.

The title followed the name: The sultan appointed him Mehmed Pasha.

Figuratively, a pasha is someone who lives or acts like a powerful dignitary: He lounged like a pasha while others did the work.
