timar system
Sipahi revenue grants
The timar system was an Ottoman land-tenure arrangement in which the state granted cavalry soldiers the right to collect taxes from agricultural land in exchange for military service.
The soldier (sipahi) didn't own the land but administered it and kept a portion of its revenues.
The system supported the Ottoman military without requiring a standing army paid from the central treasury, functioning similarly to European feudalism but with the crucial difference that timars couldn't be inherited as private property—they reverted to the state.
