eyalet

Ottoman administrative division

An eyalet was a major administrative division of the Ottoman Empire, roughly equivalent to a province, governed by a pasha or beylerbey.

The empire was organized into eyalets from the 14th century until reforms in the 1860s replaced them with smaller vilayets.

The eyalet of Egypt was among the empire's wealthiest provinces.
