beylerbey

Provincial Turkish ruler

A beylerbey was a high-ranking Ottoman governor who ruled over a large province, commanding other beys (local governors) beneath him.

The title literally means "lord of lords" or "commander of commanders." The position was abolished along with the Ottoman Empire in the early twentieth century.
