papyrus scroll
Egyptian writing surface
A papyrus scroll is a document made from papyrus, the reed plant that ancient Egyptians processed into a paper-like writing surface.
Sheets were glued together to form long strips that rolled around wooden rods.
Before bound books, scrolls were the primary format for written texts in the ancient Mediterranean world: The library contained thousands of papyrus scrolls.
