outgroup

Those not included

An outgroup is a social group to which a person does not belong or identify, as opposed to the ingroup they consider themselves part of.

The term comes from sociology and psychology, where it describes how people categorize others as "them" versus "us." Outgroup members are often perceived as more homogeneous and may be viewed with suspicion, hostility, or indifference.

Politicians often exploit outgroup fears to rally their base.
