outgroups

Those not us

Outgroups are people perceived as outside one's own social circle or identity category—the "them" in an us-versus-them framework.

The term comes from social psychology, where it describes how humans naturally categorize others as belonging or not belonging to their tribe, team, nationality, or belief system: Politicians often demonize outgroups to rally their base.

The singular outgroup also appears: The study measured bias against the outgroup.
