subset

Part within whole

A subset is a set contained entirely within another set—every element of the smaller belongs to the larger.

In math, the even numbers are a subset of the integers.

The term extends to any portion of a larger group: We surveyed a subset of customers, Jazz is a subset of American music.

A subset may equal the whole set if every element qualifies.
