netizen
Web community member
Netizen blends net (short for Internet) with citizen to describe someone who actively participates in online communities.
The term emerged in the 1990s when the Internet was still novel and carried utopian connotations of a new digital society.
Today it feels somewhat dated but still appears in discussions of online behavior and digital rights.
Netizens rallied to protest the proposed legislation.
A netizen implies engagement beyond passive browsing—someone who comments, shares, and contributes to online discourse.
