GIF
Looping image file
GIF stands for Graphics Interchange Format, a compressed image file type developed in the 1980s.
The format's ability to display short looping animations made it a staple of early web design and later a dominant form of online expression.
Technical contexts prefer the acronym: The file was saved as a GIF. (Lowercase gif is the common form.)
