doomscrolling

Compulsive bad-news browsing

Doomscrolling is the habit of compulsively scrolling through bad news online, especially on social media, despite the emotional toll.

The term emerged during the COVID-19 pandemic when people found themselves unable to stop consuming distressing content: I stayed up until 3 a.m. doomscrolling through Twitter.

Also spelled doom-scrolling or doom scrolling.
