Eclipse's outer shadow
Penumbra is the partial shadow between full shadow and full light—the fuzzy edge where an eclipse isn't total or a lamp's circle fades into darkness.
The word extends to any gray zone or ambiguous boundary: The case falls in the penumbra of the First Amendment.
