cascabel

Cannon's rear knob

Cascabel refers to the rounded knob at the rear end of a muzzle-loading cannon, used for attaching ropes to control recoil.

The term also names a small, round, dark red chile pepper popular in Mexican cuisine, prized for its nutty, slightly smoky flavor: The sauce called for dried cascabels.

The pepper's name comes from the Spanish word for rattle—the dried seeds shake inside.
