Afro-Cubans

Black Caribbean islanders

Afro-Cubans are Cubans of African descent, whose ancestors were brought to the island as enslaved people during the colonial sugar trade.

The term also describes cultural elements—particularly music, dance, and religious practices—that blend African and Cuban traditions: Afro-Cuban jazz, Afro-Cuban drumming.

Santería and other syncretic religions are central to Afro-Cuban spiritual life.
