degree

Angle measurement unit

The idea that unites many meanings of degree is in a word related to it: grade.

Things that vary by increments or stages can be characterized with degrees, such as temperature (50 degrees Celsius), or the seriousness of a crime (first degree murder).

In higher education, a degree is a certificate marking a stage of completion: He was awarded his master’s degree.

In family relationships, a degree is a step of one generation: a second-degree cousin.

People often use degree in a general way in phrases such as to a certain degree, which means “somewhat.”
