naming

Giving a designation

Naming is the act of giving something a name or identifying it by name.

Parents spend months naming a baby.

In computing, naming conventions establish consistent patterns: camelCase naming makes code readable.

Naming can also mean publicly identifying someone, often with consequence: The article stopped short of naming the accused.

To name and shame is to expose wrongdoers publicly.
