godparent

Christening ceremony sponsor

A godparent is a person who sponsors a child at baptism, traditionally accepting responsibility for the child's religious upbringing.

The role often extends beyond its religious origins to mean a trusted adult who takes special interest in a child's welfare: She asked her best friend to be the baby's godmother.

The corresponding child is a godson, goddaughter, or godchild.
