citing

Naming your sources

Citing is the act of referencing a source, authority, or example to support a claim or give credit: The lawyer kept citing precedents from the 1990s.

You cite statistics in an argument, cite someone for their contributions, or cite a passage from a book.

In legal contexts, citing can also mean issuing a summons: The officer cited him for speeding.
