Singling someone out
Identifying means recognizing or establishing what something is.
You identify a bird by its markings, a caller by their voice, a problem by its symptoms.
To identify with someone is to feel a connection or see yourself in them: I really identify with that character.
Identifying can also mean publicly associating yourself with a group or cause: She's not identifying as a Democrat anymore.
