musket balls

Revolutionary War projectiles

Musket balls are spherical lead projectiles fired from muskets—the smooth-bore firearms that dominated warfare from the 16th through 19th centuries.

Before rifled barrels and elongated bullets, soldiers loaded these round balls down the muzzle with powder and wadding.

The surgeon extracted a musket ball from his thigh.
