smart bombs
Precision-guided weapons
Smart bombs are precision-guided munitions that can be directed to specific targets, as opposed to conventional "dumb" bombs that fall along a ballistic trajectory.
They use laser guidance, GPS, or other targeting systems to strike with accuracy: Smart bombs reduced civilian casualties but didn't eliminate them.
The term emerged during the Vietnam War and became prominent in coverage of the Gulf War.
