ancient art
Civilization's early masterpieces
Ancient art encompasses creative works produced by early civilizations—Egyptian, Greek, Roman, Mesopotamian, Chinese, and others—typically before the medieval period.
The term covers painting, sculpture, pottery, architecture, and decorative objects from roughly 4000 BCE to 400 CE.
The museum's ancient art collection includes Greek vases and Roman busts.
What qualifies as ancient varies by region; in the Americas, pre-Columbian works occupy this category.
