color field
Vast painted hues
Color field is a style of abstract painting that emerged in the 1950s and 60s, characterized by large areas of flat, solid color covering most or all of the canvas.
The emphasis is on the optical and emotional effects of color itself rather than form or brushwork: Rothko's color field paintings invite meditative contemplation.
The term also describes the colored areas themselves within such works.
