averaging

Finding the middle

Averaging is finding the mean of a set of numbers—adding them together and dividing by how many there are.

The term extends to any process of finding a typical or central value: Averaging across all participants, the treatment showed modest improvement.

In finance, averaging down means buying more shares as a price falls to reduce your average cost per share.
