tone row
Twelve-pitch series
A tone row is a sequence of all twelve notes of the chromatic scale arranged in a specific order, with no note repeated until all others have sounded.
The technique, central to twelve-tone or serial composition, was developed by Arnold Schoenberg in the early twentieth century: The composer built the entire symphony from variations on a single tone row.
