Eight-by-eight grid
A checkerboard is a square board divided into 64 alternating light and dark squares, used for playing checkers or chess.
The pattern itself—any surface with contrasting squares arranged in rows—is also called a checkerboard: The kitchen floor had a black-and-white checkerboard pattern.
As a verb, to checkerboard is to arrange things in this alternating pattern.
