envelope
Flat paper container
An envelope is a flat paper container for a letter or document, typically with a flap that folds over and seals.
The word extends to any wrapper or covering: the envelope of gas surrounding a star.
To push the envelope is to test limits or boundaries—originally aviation slang for exceeding a plane's performance parameters.
