expurgate
Purify a text
To expurgate is to remove objectionable or offensive material from a text before publication.
A publisher might expurgate profanity from a novel for school use, or an editor might expurgate politically sensitive passages from historical documents.
The result is an expurgated edition—cleaned up, often at the cost of authenticity: The expurgated version omitted all references to sex.
