marks
Signs left behind
Marks is the plural of mark—visible traces, impressions, or symbols left on surfaces: The table had marks from hot dishes.
Marks are also grades or scores: She got high marks on the exam.
In slang, a mark is a target for a scam or con: The grifter identified his marks at the casino.
The German currency before the euro was the mark (or Deutsche Mark), so marks could refer to that money.
