question marks
Punctuation showing uncertainty
Question marks are punctuation symbols (?) placed at the end of sentences to indicate a direct question: Where are you going?
They signal that a response is expected or that uncertainty exists.
In informal writing, multiple question marks add emphasis or disbelief: You did what???
A question mark can also express doubt within a statement: The meeting is at 3:00 (?) or function as a symbol for the unknown: Her motives remain a question mark.
