cresting

Reaching the summit

Cresting is the decorative ornamental work along the top of a wall, roof, or piece of furniture—the ridge where something reaches its highest point.

The word captures both the ornament and the action: a wave cresting before it breaks, a career cresting at its peak, a bird cresting a hill.

The flood waters were cresting when we evacuated.
