Notre-Dame
Gothic Paris landmark
Notre-Dame is French for "Our Lady," referring to the Virgin Mary.
It names many French churches dedicated to her, most famously the medieval cathedral in Paris: the bells of Notre-Dame, the Notre-Dame fire of 2019.
The term appears in English contexts almost exclusively as a proper noun for these churches or for the University of Notre Dame in Indiana.
