mansards

Dual-pitched roof sections

Mansards is the plural of mansard, a type of roof with two slopes on each side—the lower slope steeper than the upper, creating usable attic space.

Named for French architect François Mansart, though he didn't invent it.

Mansard roofs are characteristic of Second Empire architecture: The old brownstones had distinctive mansards with dormer windows.
