darkfield

Bright specimen, black

Darkfield refers to a microscopy technique where the specimen appears bright against a dark background, achieved by illuminating the subject from an angle so only scattered light enters the lens.

The method reveals fine details invisible under standard lighting: darkfield microscopy, a darkfield image of the bacteria.

Also used attributively: darkfield illumination, darkfield condenser.
