rack and pinion
Linear motion converter
Rack and pinion is a mechanical system that converts rotational motion into linear motion, or vice versa.
A circular gear (the pinion) meshes with a flat toothed bar (the rack).
The mechanism is most familiar in automobile steering systems, where turning the steering wheel rotates the pinion, which moves the rack side to side to turn the wheels.
