floodwall

River overflow barrier

A floodwall is a vertical barrier built to prevent flooding, typically constructed of concrete or steel along riverbanks or coastlines.

Unlike earthen levees, floodwalls take up less space and can be built higher: The city erected a floodwall after the devastating 1937 flood.

Some designs allow sections to be removed when flood risk is low.
