flood zone
Water risk territory
A flood zone is an area officially designated as being at risk of flooding, typically mapped by government agencies for insurance and building purposes.
Properties in a flood zone often require special insurance and face construction restrictions.
The term also applies more loosely to any low-lying area prone to flooding: We bought the house knowing it was in a flood zone.
