barrier island

Shore-shielding sandbar

A barrier island is a long, narrow sandy island running parallel to a mainland coast, separated from it by a lagoon or bay.

These islands form natural buffers against ocean waves and storms, protecting the coastline behind them.

Many barrier islands are developed as beach resorts: The Outer Banks are a chain of barrier islands off North Carolina.
