lath

Thin wall strip

A lath is a thin, flat strip of wood used as a backing for plaster walls or roofing tiles.

Before drywall became standard, interior walls were built by nailing laths horizontally across studs, then applying wet plaster over them—a method called lath and plaster.

The word also applies to similar strips of metal or other materials used as structural backing.
