lathing

Plaster support strips

Lathing is the process of applying laths—thin strips of wood or metal—to a wall, ceiling, or framework to create a surface for plaster.

Traditional lath-and-plaster construction preceded modern drywall.

Lathing also refers to the work done on a lathe, a machine that rotates material against cutting tools to shape wood or metal: The carpenter spent the morning lathing spindles for the staircase.
