laths
Thin wood strips
Laths are thin, narrow strips of wood used as a base for plaster or stucco, or as support for roof tiles and shingles.
Before drywall became standard, interior walls were built by nailing laths to studs and applying wet plaster over them—hence lath and plaster.
The singular is lath.
