kola

African nut tree

Kola is a tree native to tropical Africa, or the caffeine-rich nut it produces.

Kola nuts have been chewed as stimulants for centuries and became a flavoring ingredient in early cola drinks—hence the name.

The spelling cola now dominates for the beverage, but kola persists in botanical contexts: kola nut extract, kola plantations in West Africa.
