Sierra Leone
Liberia's northwestern neighbor
Sierra Leone is a country on the west coast of Africa, bordered by Guinea and Liberia.
A former British colony, it gained independence in 1961.
The nation experienced a brutal civil war from 1991 to 2002, often associated with "blood diamonds"—gems mined in conflict zones.
Its capital is Freetown, originally settled by freed slaves.
