valerian
Calming herbal remedy
Valerian is an herb with small pink or white flowers, long used for its sedative properties.
The root is made into supplements and teas to promote sleep and reduce anxiety: I take valerian before bed.
The plant has a strong, earthy odor that some find unpleasant. (Capitalized Valerian is a given name.)
