coca

Alkaloid-bearing plant

Coca is a South American shrub whose leaves contain alkaloids including cocaine.

Indigenous peoples have chewed coca leaves for centuries as a mild stimulant and to suppress hunger and altitude sickness.

The plant is also the source of flavoring for Coca-Cola, though the cocaine has been removed since the early twentieth century.

Coca cultivation remains legal in Bolivia and Peru for traditional use.
