Dakota

Two states' namesake

Dakota refers to a group of Native American peoples of the northern Great Plains, also called the Sioux, or to their Siouan language.

The word means "friend" or "ally" in that language.

Dakota is also a given name for people of any gender, and the name of two U.S. states: North Dakota and South Dakota, often called the Dakotas together.
