invitation

Request for attendance

An invitation is a request for someone's presence or participation: We sent out wedding invitations, an invitation to speak at the conference.

To extend an invitation is to offer one; to accept or decline is to respond.

Figuratively, something that invites trouble or criticism is an invitation to it: Leaving your car unlocked is an invitation to theft.
