Invitationals are competitions or tournaments where participation is by invitation rather than open entry.
The term appears most often in sports—golf, track and field, gymnastics—where organizers select competitors based on ranking, reputation, or past performance: She qualified for three invitationals this season.
The singular invitational works as both noun and adjective: an invitational meet.
