introjection
Taking attitudes inward
Introjection is a psychological process of absorbing external attitudes, values, or characteristics into one's own psyche—making them part of yourself rather than keeping them at arm's length.
A child introjecting a parent's harsh criticism might develop a critical inner voice.
The term contrasts with projection, where internal feelings are attributed outward to others.
Through introjection, her mother's anxiety became her own.
