picking out

Singling something out

Picking out means selecting from a group or identifying something among other things.

You pick out a ripe melon at the market or pick out a friend's face in a crowd.

The phrase often implies care or deliberation in choosing: She spent an hour picking out the perfect gift.

It can also mean discerning with difficulty: I could barely pick out the melody over the noise.
